Earl Sweatshirt’s Hive (directed by Hiro Murai) was one of those first music videos that got me interested in shadow, framing, and most of all—color-grading. The video is cool, simple, and creepy in the best way. It feels sparse because of the darkened edges creating this kind of vignette effect at the center of the frame. Kobayashi likes to do a version of that in his films, I would learn, though Kobayashi likes to dispense with the movement. I became really interested in Murai’s work after this video and would recommend checking out this as well as his other works afterwards.
